one size doesn’t fit all

River Montessori High School (RMHS) is the product of a group of educators who reject the “assembly line” approach to educating students. We believe in providing a deeply integrated, vigorous, community-centered school experience that prepares high school students for “what’s next” in life, whether that is trade school, starting a business, attending college, or something else.

The foundation of RMHS is an Indiana Core 40 Diploma. beyond that, students are only limited by their desire, dedication, and work ethic.

A zip code shouldn’t Limit your future

A sobering study released in 2018 through a partnership between the U.S. Census Bureau and researchers at Harvard University illustrated the profound effect a student’s home zip code has on lifelong financial and health outcomes.

Supported by fundraising efforts and participation in Indiana’s School Choice program, Two-Thirds of The seats at River Montessori High School are reserved for low- and Middle-Income families.

Small School, Huge Impact

River Montessori High School is more than a “one off” school in downtown South Bend. As a member of the Wildflower network of schools, the launch team of RMHS is breaking new ground as the network’s first high school in the mainland United States. Recognizing the potential for the school’s replication, the Drexel Fund – an education venture philanthropy organization –  recently committed more than $120k over the next two years in support of River’s launch.

The curriculum and practices being developed at River Montessori High School will become a template for new schools across the country.

COVID-19 Response

Covid-19 has affected – and continues to affect – general fundraising and facility preparation. Adding a quarantine area, creating a low-contact keycard entrance, investing in PPE for faculty and students, purchasing additional classroom equipment to facilitate distance and/or hybrid learning, and creating outdoor classroom spaces were not a elements of the school’s original budgetary model.

Checks may be mailed to River Montessori High School, 333 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46601.

Facility Preparation for 2021 - 2022

River Montessori High School is “bootstrapping” its way to full capacity by adding and renovating additional leased space each year with a target of occupying 6,000 - 7,000 square feet by Fall 2023 with 60 - 70 students across four grades.

Endowment

In 2015 and 2017 the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County (CFSJC) sponsored “Give Local” days that raised a combined $15M to support local non-profits. Participation in these events was limited to organizations with endowments managed by the CFSJC valued at $25k or more. We are seeking a visionary donor who will ensure that River Montessori High School qualifies for the next Give Local opportunity.
